  water exchanges

The following listings support the exchange of water-related data between network partners. At this time, communities of interest are creating exchanges related to ambient water quality, drinking water quality, geospatial information, and point source monitoring. More information and links to implementation resources for each data exchange appear below.

ambient water quality

  • Beach Monitoring
Under the BEACH Act (Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act), grant recipients are required to submit beach monitoring data to the U.S. EPA. EPA is currently accepting beach monitoring, station location, and sample and result data through the Water Quality Exchange.
    Status: In Production
  • Beach Notification
Under the BEACH Act (Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act), grant recipients are required to submit beach notification data to the U.S. EPA. This data exchange allows for the reporting of beach meta data, contact information, and beach advisory and closing data.
    Status: In Production
  • California Environmental Data Exchange System (CEDES)
The California Environmental Protection Agency's Department of Water Resources and the State Water Resources Control Board are expanding their existing data management system to make California's environmental data compatible and accessible for analysis and reporting. Partners in this data exchange will trade information using Exchange Network protocols and infrastructure.
    Status: In Development
  • Chesapeake Bay Program Regional Exchange for BMPs
This data exchange allows Chesapeake Bay states to submit and solicit data on Non-Point Source Best Management Practices to and from the U.S. EPA Chesapeake Bay Program Office (CBPO).
    Status: In Development
  • Pacific Northwest Water Quality Data Exchange
This data exchange was developed by the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. It allows partners to share water quality sampling and monitoring data.
    Status: In Production
  • WQX - Water Quality Exchange / STORET
This data exchange allows Network partners to share ambient water quality data with the U.S. EPA Office of Water.
    Status: In Production

    • Water Quality Data Exchange
This exchange has been coordinated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Information Resources Management and Water Monitoring and Standards Unit. The WQDE builds on the Water Quality eXchange (WQX) and features an enhanced WQX schema and web services for submitting project descriptions, images, and data. New Jersey developed robust tools for retrieving this information and disseminating it via the Exchange Network Browser and NJGeoWeb, and internet mapping application. The WQDE supports the sharing of water quality data among federal, state, private, and non-profit partners.
      Status: In Production

point source monitoring

  • NetDMR
NetDMR is a national tool for regulated Clean Water Act permittees to submit discharge monitoring reports (DMRs) electronically via a secure Internet application to states or U.S. EPA through the Exchange Network. NetDMR integrates directly with U.S. EPA's ICIS-NPDES database as well as with locally maintained state NPDES databases.
    Status: In Production
  • PCS eDMR Data Exchange
This data exchange allows network partners to send electronic Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) to U.S. EPA's Pollution Control Systems (PCS) using the Exchange Network.
Status: In Production but Phasing Out

drinking water quality

  • Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS)
This data exchange allows users to submit data to the U.S. EPA's Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS). SDWIS is an EPA national database that contains information about public water systems and their violations of EPA's drinking water regulations.
    Status: In Production
  • Electronic Drinking Water Report (eDWR)
This data exchange allows states to implement an electronic flow of drinking water data directly from laboratories and water systems to the State Drinking Water Programs. It also allows access to laboratory data in XML format for U.S. EPA programs and the general public via Network Nodes.
    Status: In Production

geospatial information

  • National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Update
The NHD Update Flow enables the transmittal of updates to the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) created by local updaters or state NHD data stewards to the national NHD data repository administered by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The flow also enables USGS to send updates from the national repository to satellite NHD databases administered by other agencies, including state stewards of the NHD.
    Status: In Production
  • National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Event
The NHD Event Flow enables the transmittal of spatial representations of surface water related features. This exchange supplements water program related data flows that exchange surface water attribute information.
    Status: In Production
  • Kentucky Watershed Modeling Information Portal
Offices from Kentucky State government are collaborating with U.S. EPA Region IV, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Open GIS Consortium to build a web portal that will quickly and accurately deliver current and appropriately formatted watershed model input data.
    Status: In Development
