Network Technology Group to Host Schematron Open Call led by Dr. Yunhao Zhang

On August 22nd from 2:00-3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, the Exchange Network's Network Technology Group (NTG) will host a Schematron open call, presented by Chris Clark, of the EPA office of Environmental Information, and Dr. Yunhao Zhang, to inform the Network community on the use and function of the new Schematron guidance document written by Dr. Zhang. The agenda for the Schematron open call will be tailored to potential users of the Schematron technology on the Exchange Network. The Schematron open call will discuss how Schematron can be used to enforce business rules and improve XML data quality, best practices for using Schematron, and guidance in developing Schematron rules. The open call will also focus on collecting feedback about the use of Schematron on the Exchange Network, and answering any questions or concerns that Network partners may have.

Background Information on Schematron
Schematron is an ISO standard validation language that holds some significant advantages over traditional validation methods. With the introduction of the Extensible Markup Language (XML), some of the business rules can be, at least partially, specified in XML schemas, and XML documents can then be validated against the schemas. Since XML is more restrictive than other markup languages, validation based on an XML schema can detect many data element errors such as type mismatches, missing elements and even referential integrity issues.

Questions
Network partners are welcome to the open call. If you have any questions about the structure or agenda for the open call, please contact the NTG Co-chairs.
