Data Exchange Description

The Northeast and Coastal Ocean Data Partnership (NeCODP) developed the Ocean Data Partnership Exchange (ODPX) to accommodate a variety of non-regulatory environmental monitoring data types. The Partnership is composed of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceanography, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Gulf of Maine Council, Seabird Ecological Assessment Network (SEANET), and National Environmental Research Reserve System. These Partners collect data from fisheries trawl surveys, dead bird beach surveys, oceanographic and meteorological buoy data, environmental data on lobster pots, estuarine monitoring data, and contaminant indicator data.

The Partnership started with the WQX schema and extended it where necessary to accommodate the disparate data sources. When extensions to the schema were made, efforts were taken to use existing standards where possible. Schema extensions included additional metadata fields from the NASA Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) and the NJ Exchange. Community-approved standards such as GeoRSS, GML, and the Open Geospatial Consortiums’ Sensor Observation Service (SOS) were also included to accommodate the geospatial data.

A node was developed at GMRI using the OpenNode2 software on a Linux environment. An ODPX plug-in was developed based on the OpenNode2 WQX plug-in.

GMRI developed the back-end database to accept data from the Partners via node and client node submissions and incorporated the data into a custom-built web application. This application displays locations where monitoring has occurred and for what parameters; thereby helping identify where monitoring gaps exist and where sampling collaboration is possible. Data can be downloaded from the node through the portal in XML, HTML, and CSV formats. The NeCODP Data Discovery and Download Portal is available here.
